Overview

Biomedical science is a growing interdisciplinary field of study aimed at understanding fundamental processes of life, applied sciences and the application of this knowledge to medicine, human health, and related research. Biomedical scientists integrate knowledge from numerous fields of study, such as physiology, anatomy, pathophysiology and paraclinical science. Through interprofessional collaboration, biomedical scientists create, revise and implement innovative methods of preventing disease, diagnosing health concerns, analyzing current and potential analysis tools, and treatment options for various disorders and diseases.

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program provides students with the education, knowledge, skills and hands-on experience through classroom work and a summer field experience.

The program plays a significant role in developing skilful graduates who, in turn, contribute to the development of new therapies and approaches targeted to enhance human health and wellness.

Graduates of the Biomedical Sciences program may also pursue higher and specialized education through master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as medical school, dentistry or pharmacy, to name a few.

Work Placement

You will participate in one mandatory paid or unpaid 14-week work internship to gain full-time professional work experience. Work internship takes place during the summer between the 3rd and 4th Years. Work will occur in diverse settings such as for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises, public or privately funded laboratories, governmental or educational institutions, or medical/scientific environments.

The experience will enhance the theoretical learning in the program, giving you hands-on application in the field of biomedical sciences. Work experiences might include supporting ongoing research, functioning as a collaborative member of a research team and/or creating, managing, reviewing, and communicating experimental data/findings. Students will be supported throughout their field experience by various key supports and key faculty and staff from the program.

Career opportunities

In 2020, the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization (OBIO) indicated that the health science industry has the opportunity to become a leader in the economy and has the potential to create value by addressing all aspects of human health.  The Canadian biomedical industry has also been growing steadily in all related sectors.

As the field of health care and medicine becomes increasingly advanced and complex, demand grows for highly skilled professionals with  biomedical science education. Many scientific firms in Ontario are successfully developing medical innovations to treat diseases and enhance the quality of life.

Maintaining the expansion of this industry in Canada requires a workforce that is versed, skillful, and educated. From production lines, technologists, and technicians, to scientists and researchers, there is a demand for educated work-ready qualified employees in the field of biomedical sciences.
