Overview

Humber’s Personal Support Worker certificate program gives you the skills you need for an in-demand career. Personal support workers play an especially important role in supporting the health-care team in long-term care, hospitals, home care and community health-care organizations. They contribute to the overall well-being and quality of life of their clients.

Students will learn to safely assist with personal care, mobility, in some cases household management, and emotional support for individuals across the lifespan. Additionally, students will learn to recognize the physical and emotional changes of aging and illness while supporting clients to maximize their independence.

With state-of-the-art facilities, committed professors, and valuable work-integrated learning, Humber students have a competitive edge.

An Education in High Demand

The aging population and sustaining government focus on home and long-term care, continues to create a strong demand for personal support workers. As a Humber Personal Support Worker graduate your knowledge of aging and the common conditions and abilities of this group, will well-equip you to assist with providing safe and effective support. Your ability to provide personal care and household maintenance will allow you to aid seniors and others who need assistance with their activities of daily living.

Work-Integrated Learning

Throughout the program, students will participate in 300 hours of field experience. In Semester 1, students learn and practise important personal support worker skills in Humber’s simulation learning lab and apartment. In Semester 2, students complete two unpaid field experiences in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Two unpaid field experiences allow you to gain valuable hands on practical and professional skills which will serve you well in your career. Beginning the first week of January, the Semester 2 field experience is divided into two rotations over 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care (LTC) facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. The long-term care experience is fully supervised in the LTC centre. During the community experience, students have field advisors who visit on a regular basis to support student learning.
