Overview
A wide variety of opportunities await you in the heavy equipment repair field. Individuals who possess mechanical aptitude, problem-solving abilities, can work individually and as a member of a team are well-suited to enter this lucrative trade area. Conestoga’s Motive Power Technician – Heavy Duty Equipment diploma program will provide you with the opportunity to develop skills in all of these areas. With a focus on hands-on training to complement the in-class theory, you will be well-positioned to enter this high demand trade area.
In addition to the core trade-related skills, this program also prepares you to take on related roles within the heavy-duty equipment industry including business development, shop and parts management; and a variety of other alternative options to a traditional technician career. The second year of the program will enable you to delve deeper into related topics such as engine failure analysis and electrical diagnostics and repair.
Qualifying students have the opportunity to engage in a paid co-operative education work term during the summer between years 1 and 2 of the program, enabling you to apply your knowledge in a practical environment. The optional co-op stream includes one co-op work term.
As a graduate of the diploma program, you will have an opportunity to receive an automatic exemption from Levels 1 and 2 of the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship in-school training should you choose to pursue that career pathway.
Career opportunities
Graduates may hold positions such as heavy-duty equipment, agricultural equipment, powered lift truck and truck and coach technician apprentice, service writer, shop manager, and business owner, and work in settings that include manufacturing, service and sales.
